Sealcoating is a thin protective coating — cheap, preventative, every 2–3 years. Resurfacing lays 1.5–2 in. of new asphalt — roughly 10x the cost, restorative. Sealcoating can't fix damage. Resurfacing can't fix a failed base.

How to tell which you need
Surface looks gray or faded but is structurally sound (no cracking, no soft spots) → sealcoat. Surface is cracked or worn but the base underneath tests solid → resurface. The base itself has failed (alligator cracking, depressions, pumping) → neither will fix it; that's a repair-or-replace decision.
The upsell problem — being blunt
Sealcoating is the most over-sold service in this industry. It's genuinely valuable on the right driveway at the right interval, and completely useless on a failing one. If someone is selling you sealcoating for a cracked, potholed driveway, they're taking your money for something that won't do anything meaningful. We'd rather tell you that plainly, including about our own services, than sell you the wrong thing.
