The Charlotte climate factor
Charlotte's winters bring repeated freeze-thaw cycling — water gets into small cracks, freezes, expands, and makes them bigger, over and over through the season. Hot Carolina summers accelerate UV oxidation, drying out and hardening the surface over time. And Piedmont red clay shifts as it wets and dries, moving the ground underneath the pavement.
