This is a planning range, not a quote. Only a site visit can price base condition, drainage, and access exactly.
Measure the paved area in feet. For an odd shape, measure it in rectangles and add them up.

The installed price range comes from the same size-based figures published in our asphalt driveway cost guide: roughly $8–$15 per square foot, with larger driveways landing at a lower rate per square foot because crew and equipment mobilization is a fixed cost. For driveways between about 400 and 1,000 sq ft, the calculator reads straight off that guide's size table and scales between its rows.
If you're removing an existing driveway, it adds $3–$7 per square foot for tear-out and haul-away — again the figure from the cost guide.
Asphalt tonnage is area × thickness (in.) × 0.00604 × 1.10. The 0.00604 is tons per square foot per inch of compacted depth at a standard hot-mix density of about 145 lb per cubic foot, and the 1.10 adds 10% for waste and trimming. Hot mix is bulkier loose than after it's rolled — industry references such as NAPA put the loose-to-compacted ratio at roughly 1.25–1.35 — so tonnage is calculated from the finished, compacted thickness rather than the loose volume. Base material is plain geometry: area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ 27 gives cubic yards of compacted base.
Residential driveways typically get 2–3 in. of compacted asphalt over 6–8 in. of compacted aggregate base on Charlotte's Piedmont clay. Heavier vehicles like RVs and trailers call for the full 3 in.
Drainage, access, slope, base condition, and vehicle weight don't change the dollar range, because the cost guide doesn't publish a dollar figure for each of them. They're shown as the factors that push a real price toward the upper end — and with several of them stacked, past it. The full list of what changes a paving price explains each one.
This covers the asphalt work only. Items that depend on the specific property — permits, retaining walls, culvert or drainage structures, gates, and decorative borders — are typically priced separately on a written quote.
